About Spring Moon Design

β€œGiven enough love,
even the trees would speakβ€”
spring moon.”
— Heinosuke Gosho (1902-1981)

Spring Moon Design seeks out artifacts and art pieces from near and farβ€”either found or commissionedβ€”whose design and color palette take their cue from nature; objects with a story that inspire wonder, evoke memories, and blur the boundaries between the interior and exterior.

Our aim is bring the joy of nature and timeless craft to your home, through singular pieces that will endure.

The Story Behind the Story

Backyard beehives. Suburban homesteading in Southern California.

The woman behind Spring Moon Design, Michelle Standley, grew up in the desert suburbs of Los Angeles, surrounded by makers and backyard naturalists: a grandfather who bred birds and built wood furniture; a mother who arranged flowers and sewed clothes; and a father who kept bees and tended koi. She learned to sew and build, developing a lifelong fascination with craft and the natural world.

Since then, she has lived and worked around the worldβ€”from Hawaii to Seoul, Prague to Berlin, and from New York City to the Hudson Valleyβ€”gathering stories and honing an aesthetic shaped by nature and craft.

When she’s not tinkering or hunting for treasures, Michelle works as a writer, artist, and cultural historian. She has a PhD from NYU and is a former professor at The Cooper Union and Pratt Institute. Her work has appeared in New York Magazine, The Brooklyn Rail, and The Journal of Architecture and explores how people create meaning through objects, materials, and everyday rituals.

Spring Moon Design is an extension of this practice: a celebration of quiet beauty, simplicity, and the handmade.
