Patchwork Denim Jacket
Reclaimed denim and repurposed textiles
Inspired by the layered texture and resilient structure of oyster shells, Yakubu deconstructed vintage denim to create a fitted jean jacket with extreme proportions. Sleeves extend well beyond the wrist, evoking the protective extension of a shell beyond the body. Dozens of old jeans, their original seams, buttons, and belt loops preserved, emphasize the garment’s previous lives and histories of wear.
Denim patchwork is a fitting material for reflecting on body as armor and repository of memories. Denim is often associated with manual labor, rebellion, and individual freedom and patchwork has a long history within working-class and Black diasporic communities. Reimagined as a work of art, the jacket celebrates fashion as protective shield and vehicle for self-reinvention.
