Handcrafted in Tokyo by the 190-year-old family business Shirokiya Denbei Shoten, these Edo brooms embody both functionality and beauty, following techniques unchanged since the Edo period. Each broom is made from carefully selected houki morokoshi grass, chosen for its soft resilience, lightweight center, and ease of use. The brooms’ distinctive construction allows them to sweep corners, stairs, tatami, wooden floors, and even delicate surfaces like carpets and laptops with surprising efficiency.
We purchased these brooms directly from the family-run shop, where we witnessed the care and precision involved in every step. A kind demonstration by the shop’s staff revealed subtle techniques for sweeping corners and dusting delicate surfaces. Each broom is slightly different, shaped by the hands of its maker, offering both a practical tool and a small work of living craft.
Beyond their functional elegance, Edo brooms carry cultural and spiritual resonance. In Japan, brooms are associated with purity and care; we were reminded of this while visiting the Moss Temple in Kyoto, where a monk swept leaves from the moss with patient, meditative precision.
We think they look beautiful displayed on the wall, a gentle call to mindfulness and patience in domestic everyday life.
